One of my favorite things right now is dwelling in the messiness of the first Christmas. Maybe it's because I'm mama to a toddler this year. Christmas used to be ornately crafted: glass ornaments delicately arranged, gifts carefully slipped under the branches, carols in eight-part harmony. Now my living room floor is covered in scattered toys and half-full sippy cups, and the tree is behind a playpen fence to guard from exploring fingers.
This is beautiful, and as a birth doula, I love your imagining of Christ’s birth more than the Renaissance artwork. Yours has just as much (or more!) truth in it, because birth is messy and a bit chaotic and definitely wet and loud, and it’s always, always a miracle. A baby’s first cry is one of the best sounds in the world, and your version includes that cry. Thank you for sharing this <3
